Abstract: Esketamine, the dextro-isomer of ketamine, primarily acts as a noncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Beyond its anesthetic properties, esketamine confers organ protection through multiple mechanisms, including the suppression of inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, regulation of calcium overload, modulation of gut microbiota, control of cellular autophagy, and inhibition of ferroptosis. Consequently, it emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for mitigating perioperative organ injury.
